A 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed and his companion seriously injured after a truck struck their motorcycle in Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred at around 1:30pm on the Lakshmipur–Feni Highway near the area known as Baichar Pol, according to eyewitnesses and highway police officials.
The deceased was identified as Salman, son of the late Milon Mia of Koaria village under Amanullahpur Union in the upazila. The injured man, Riyad, aged 20, was admitted to Noakhali General Hospital with serious injuries.
Police and witnesses said Salman and Riyad had been travelling by motorcycle from Chaumuhani intersection towards Chandraganj when the collision took place. At one stage, a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction hit the motorcycle, causing both riders to be thrown onto the road.
Salman died at the scene from his injuries, while local residents and police members rescued Riyad and sent him to hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding his condition.
Following the incident, members of Chandraganj Highway Police went to the scene and recovered the body. The body was later sent to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Officer-in-Charge Adel Akbar of Chandraganj Highway Police said both the truck and the motorcycle involved in the collision had been seized as part of the investigation. He added that no case had yet been filed in connection with the accident.
Police officials said an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision was underway. However, no further information regarding the truck driver or the possible causes of the crash was immediately available.
