In Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar, district police intelligence (DB) have arrested a woman, identified as the wife of a local BNP leader, along with a Rohingya national, after recovering 40,000 yaba tablets.
The arrests were made at around 9:30 pm on Wednesday (20 May) following a tip-off. Acting on confidential information, a DB team conducted an operation at the residence of Nazrul Islam in the Hajirpara area of Kachhapia Union, Ramu.
The arrested individuals are identified as Salma Begum (45), wife of Nazrul Islam, the vice-president of the Kachhapia Union BNP, and Mohammad Hasim, also known as Osman (35), a resident of Rohingya Camp-13 in Thaingkhali, Ukhiya.
According to police statements, the raid was carried out at the mentioned house, where officers recovered 40,000 yaba tablets. Both suspects were apprehended from the scene. Police further stated that during the operation, approximately three to four additional drug traffickers managed to flee.
Local police confirmed that legal proceedings are underway under the Narcotics Control Act against the arrested individuals and those who escaped. Efforts are also continuing to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged drug trafficking network.
The Officer-in-Charge of Ramu Police Station, Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, confirmed the incident and stated that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests are expected as part of the operation targeting the wider network.
