Nahid Rana Unsold in SA20 Auction as Risad Hossain Prepares for Debut

Bangladeshi fast bowling prospect Nahid Rana will miss out on the upcoming season of South Africa’s premier franchise league, the SA20, after failing to attract a single bid during the mini-auction held on Wednesday, 8 October. The young express bowler was among a pool of 156 players shortlisted for the event, but franchise representatives opted against placing a bid for his services.

Rana, who has built a strong reputation in international cricket through his exceptional bowling speed and natural bounce, entered the bidding process with a reserve price of 1.5 million South African Rand (SAR). That figure equates to over 10 million Bangladeshi Taka. Despite his impressive credentials on the international stage, the substantial price tag appeared to deter potential buyers during the competitive selection process.

The mini-auction featured 95 local South African cricketers alongside 61 overseas candidates. A total of 20 vacancies were available across four of the league’s six franchises. To secure these remaining spots, teams had a collective remaining purse cap of SAR 35.025 million. Johannesburg Super Kings also retained a wildcard pick option, which operates independently of the standard squad salary limit.

Two franchises took no part in the auction process. Both Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals had already finalized their maximum allowable 19-player rosters prior to the event, leaving the active bidding entirely to the four remaining teams.

Despite Rana’s disappointment, Bangladesh will retain a presence in the tournament through leg-spinner Risad Hossain. Secured earlier in the year by Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Risad remains inline to feature in the competition provided there are no scheduling conflicts or fitness concerns. Known for his useful lower-order hitting alongside his wrist-spin capabilities, the young Bangladeshi player will be eager to prove his worth on South African pitches.

Several established international figures secured moves during the proceedings. West Indian legend Kieron Pollard, former South African captain Faf du Plessis, New Zealand paceman Trent Boult, West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer, and South Africa’s white-ball leader Temba Bavuma all found homes ahead of the new campaign.

The third edition of the SA20 is scheduled to begin on 17 January, culminating in the final on 21 February. Sunrisers Eastern Cape enter the tournament as reigning champions after lifting the trophy for the second consecutive time last season, looking to defend their title against a heavily bolstered field.
