Narayanganj Station Besieged Over Alleged Police Corruption

A highly volatile situation erupted in the Bandar area of Narayanganj on Sunday evening, 7 June, when hundreds of aggrieved local residents laid siege to the Bandar Model Police Station. The major demonstration was triggered by the tragic demise of 18-year-old Mohammad Jobayer, who succumbed to severe injuries inflicted during a violent street robbery. Public anger reached a boiling point following serious allegations that local law enforcement officers intentionally delayed filing a criminal case and corruptly demanded a bribe from the grieving family.

Details of the Fatal Mugging

The victim, Mohammad Jobayer, was the son of Jahangir and originally hailed from the Rajapur area within the Pabna Sadar Upazila. At the time of the incident, he was residing in a rented property in the Enayetnagar locality of Bandar, Narayanganj, where he was employed at a local commercial establishment.

According to verified local reports, the fatal altercation took place on Wednesday, 3 June, at approximately 9:00 PM. Jobayer was walking home after completing his shift at work when three unidentified muggers intercepted him on the northern side of the Bhanga Bridge in Enayetnagar. When the teenager attempted to resist the robbery, the assailants stabbed him repeatedly across his body before fleeing the scene with his mobile phone.

Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the disturbance and rescued the critically wounded youth. He was initially admitted to the 300-Bed Hospital in Khanpur, Narayanganj. However, as his medical condition deteriorated rapidly, healthcare professionals transferred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for specialised emergency care. Jobayer remained hospitalised for several days before losing his battle for survival at approximately 5:30 AM on Sunday.

Extortion Claims and Administrative Inaction

The local unrest intensified substantially when Jobayer’s body was brought back to the Bandar area on Sunday evening. The victim’s family and neighbours accused the local police department of systemic negligence and corruption, asserting that these factors severely hindered the initial pursuit of justice.

According to the deceased youth’s family, Jobayer’s father had approached the Bandar Model Police Station shortly after the stabbing took place to lodge a formal complaint. However, the duty officers reportedly refused to register the case. A neighbour, identified as Tipu, explicitly claimed that police personnel had demanded a bribe of 10,000 BDT to initiate legal proceedings. Tipu stated that because the financially strained family could not provide the illicit funds, the police flatly declined to record the incident.

Public Protest and Station Blockade

The news of the teenager’s death, coupled with the revelation of the alleged extortion, provoked immediate public outrage. A crowd of over one hundred furious local residents carried the youth’s body directly to the entrance of the Bandar Model Police Station.

The demonstrators staged an intense sit-in, completely blocking access to the building while chanting slogans against administrative malpractice. The public demanded an immediate, transparent murder investigation, the swift apprehension of the muggers, and a formal explanation from senior police management regarding the refusal to accept the family’s initial report.

Police Response and Disciplinary Action

In an effort to defuse the escalating protest, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Bandar Model Police Station, Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin, directly addressed the gathered crowd. Speaking to media representatives, the OC confirmed the stand-off and announced that immediate administrative steps had been taken to resolve the community’s grievances.

“The local residents came to the police station. I have assured them that proper and appropriate measures will be taken regarding this matter. They placed their trust in my words and have since left the station premises. Furthermore, we have already withdrawn the accused Sub-Inspector from duty,” stated OC Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin.

The Officer-in-Charge clarified that he possessed no prior official documentation indicating that the victim’s family had been turned away when attempting to file a complaint. He also disclosed that law enforcement officials had already taken one suspect into custody in connection with the mugging.

Because no official case file regarding the assault on Jobayer existed at the time of the arrest, the suspect had initially been sent to court under an entirely separate legal matter. The OC assured the public that as soon as the victim’s family formally registers the murder case, the detained suspect will be shown formally arrested for the killing. Police and intelligence operations remain underway to locate and apprehend the remaining fugitives.
