New BCB Age-Group Tournament Set to Begin on 28 August

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is set to introduce a new 50-over tournament aimed at giving age-group cricketers more opportunities to play competitive cricket and gain valuable match experience.

The three-team competition will begin on 28 August, with Bangladesh Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 sides taking part. All matches will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, providing the young players with an opportunity to compete at one of the country’s principal international cricket venues.

The opening fixture on 28 August will see the Under-17 side face the Under-19 team. After a one-day break, the Under-19 side will return to action against the Under-23 team on 30 August. Every match in the tournament, from the opening game through to the final, is scheduled to begin at 9.30am.

The league stage will follow a double round-robin format. Each of the three teams will play the other two sides twice, meaning every team is guaranteed four matches during the first phase of the competition.

That structure is particularly significant for developing cricketers. Rather than relying mainly on training sessions and occasional fixtures, players will have several opportunities to experience the demands of 50-over cricket. Batters can work on building innings over a longer period, while bowlers will have to manage spells, changes in conditions and different phases of a match. Fielders, meanwhile, will gain further experience of maintaining concentration throughout a full one-day contest.

The competition will also bring players from different stages of Bangladesh’s age-group pathway together. The Under-17 players will face opponents with greater experience, while the Under-19 and Under-23 squads will have an opportunity to test themselves against players at different stages of development.

Once the league phase is completed, the two teams finishing highest in the points table will qualify for the final. The title decider is scheduled for 9 September, bringing the tournament to a close after the teams have completed their respective four-match league campaigns.

With all matches taking place at the same venue and starting at the same time, the tournament will have a consistent playing schedule. The use of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium also means the participants will gain experience of competing at a major cricket ground in front of the standards expected at a higher level of the game.

For emerging cricketers, regular competitive fixtures can be an important part of the transition from age-group cricket towards senior-level competition. The new tournament is intended to provide that additional exposure while allowing selectors and team management to assess players in meaningful match situations.

The competition will begin with the Under-17 versus Under-19 fixture on 28 August, followed by the remaining league matches before the final on 9 September. For the participating players, it will offer four guaranteed opportunities during the league stage to demonstrate their ability, consistency and readiness for the next step in their cricketing development.
