In Bogura’s Sadar upazila, police have detained two individuals following allegations that a newborn infant was killed and its body disposed of in a pond. The incident has prompted an ongoing investigation.
The case relates to Telihara village in Shekerkola Union, located in the northern part of the upazila. According to police and local accounts, Nipa of Unchurkhir area in Gabtali upazila was first married to Shukur Ali, son of Jahidul Islam of Naruli area in Bogura Sadar. That marriage reportedly ended in separation around six months ago due to marital disputes.
Subsequently, Nipa entered into another marriage on the 15th of Ramadan this year with Dulal, son of Nur Alam of Shekerkola Union in Bogura Sadar.
Authorities allege that on Friday night, Nipa gave birth to a child. It is further alleged that, fearing social stigma, the newborn was killed using a blade. The infant’s body was then reportedly dumped into a pond near the residence.
The matter became widely known in the area on Saturday afternoon, 9 May, leading to public concern and prompting police intervention. Officers from Bogura Sadar Police Station arrived at the scene and detained both Nipa and her current husband, Dulal, for questioning.
Local residents stated that such an incident had not previously been reported in the area. Following the discovery, tension and distress were observed among members of the local community.
Police confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death. Both detainees are currently being interrogated, and legal action will be taken upon completion of the inquiry.
The body of the newborn has been recovered and is being prepared for post-mortem examination at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue.
