Police Step In as Rival BNP and Jamaat Rallies Trigger Standoff in Narayanganj

High political friction gripped Narayanganj’s Araihazar on Saturday afternoon after rival processions led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami converged in the same commercial thoroughfare. The simultaneous demonstrations escalated into a tense ninety-minute showdown as opposing cadres faced off, with a potential street clash averted only by the prompt physical intervention of law enforcement.

The standoff began around 5:00 pm in the bustling heart of Araihazar Bazaar. According to onlookers, Jamaat-e-Islami activists were conducting a scheduled rally through the market area when a second demonstration, assembled by local BNP supporters, arrived at the same location. The close proximity of the two political groups triggered loud counter-protests and sharp exchanges, rapidly heightening the risk of open violence. Alerted to the deteriorating situation, police squads rushed to the scene and positioned themselves firmly between the two factions.

Several prominent local figures were present on the ground to lead their respective supporters. The BNP delegation included Lutfar Rahman Abdu, a member of the party’s district convening committee, alongside Araihazar Upazila BNP President Yusuf Ali Bhuiyan and General Secretary Jewel Ahmed. Leading the Jamaat procession were District Ameer Mominur Haq Sarkar, Social Welfare Secretary Professor Ilias Molla, and Araihazar North Unit Ameer Maulana Monirul Islam.

In the aftermath of the rally, representatives from both political organisations exchanged blame over the confrontation. Professor Ilias Molla asserted that Jamaat had announced its schedule well ahead of time, accusing local BNP leaders of organizing a deliberate counter-march to obstruct their event. He added that Jamaat supporters deliberately exercised patience to keep the peace. BNP General Secretary Jewel Ahmed strongly disputed the claim, maintaining that his party was carrying out its own pre-planned activities and had not engaged in any deliberate provocation.

To prevent the dispute from spilling over into broader public disorder, local authorities drafted additional tactical units into Araihazar Bazaar. Officers maintained a buffer zone separating the rival crowds until both rallies eventually wound down without physical conflict.

Summarising the intervention, Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sabzel Hossain confirmed that law enforcement acted quickly to contain the situation. He noted that strategic positioning by the police ensured public safety, confirming that no injuries or property damage were reported and that both groups eventually vacated the premises peacefully.
