Police have arrested SM Humayun Kabir Ujjal, general secretary of the Panchagarh municipal Awami League, in connection with several cases filed with Panchagarh Sadar Police Station.
Ujjal was arrested from his residence in the Dhakaiyapatti area of Panchagarh town on Wednesday (16 September), police said. He was later produced before a court in the afternoon, where a judge ordered that he be sent to jail.
According to police, several cases have been filed against Ujjal at Panchagarh Sadar Police Station. Among them is a case concerning allegations that Al Amin, who went missing during the anti-discrimination student movement, was abducted and killed. He is also facing allegations relating to attacks on students and a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Police said legal proceedings in the cases were already under way. His arrest on Wednesday was carried out as part of the ongoing legal process. After being taken into custody from his home, the necessary formalities were completed before he was brought before the court.
Following the hearing, the judge ordered that Ujjal be sent to jail. Police subsequently took him into custody in accordance with the court’s order.
Panchagarh Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mokhlesur Rahman confirmed the arrest. He said Ujjal had several cases against him at the police station and that, after the required legal procedures were completed, he was produced before the court and sent to jail under its direction.
Ujjal had been serving as general secretary of the Panchagarh municipal Awami League. The cases against him relate to allegations arising from incidents during the anti-discrimination student movement and other alleged offences.
The allegation concerning Al Amin is linked to his disappearance during the student movement and a subsequent allegation of abduction and killing. Separate allegations have also been brought over attacks on students, while another case has been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings. An arrest or the filing of a case does not by itself establish that the allegations have been proven. Their validity will be determined through the legal process, based on evidence and other materials presented before the court.
Police said Ujjal was arrested on the basis of the cases registered against him. With the court ordering his detention in jail, the proceedings in those cases will continue through the appropriate legal channels.
Ujjal remains in custody following the court’s order. Further developments will depend on the progress of the cases and decisions taken by the court during the subsequent stages of the judicial process.
