A senior judicial court in Dhaka has directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to launch a formal probe into Sub-Inspector Mohammad Neyamat Ullah of Savar Model Police Station following serious allegations of bribery, extortion, and custody-related intimidation.
Dhaka Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Mahabubur Rahman issued the directive on Sunday afternoon, 16 August. Accepting the petition for judicial consideration, the magistrate ordered that a senior PBI officer be assigned to lead the inquiry and submit a comprehensive report within a stipulated timeframe. The complainant’s legal counsel, Advocate S. H. Krishna, confirmed the court’s order following the session.
The formal complaint was lodged by 54-year-old Suraiya Begum, a resident of the Paschim Rajashon area in Savar. Sub-Inspector Neyamat Ullah is cited as the principal accused in the case, alongside two named associates and up to eight unidentified individuals.
Details set out in the initial petition allege that the accused had been systematically demanding substantial sums of money from the complainant’s son, Shamim Reza. After Shamim repeatedly refused to pay, individuals acting on the officer’s behalf allegedly vandalised his business premises and looted cash from the establishment.
The ordeal intensified when Shamim was taken into custody by Savar Model Police Station in connection with another matter. The lawsuit asserts that whilst Shamim was detained, Sub-Inspector Neyamat Ullah threatened him with severe physical and psychological abuse under remand unless a sum of 20 lakh taka was paid. The officer is also accused of extorting two high-end iPhone devices from the family, in addition to collecting 4.5 lakh taka across two previous instalments under duress.
The filing further details that following Shamim’s arrest, Sub-Inspector Neyamat Ullah confiscated and misappropriated 3,38,000 taka in cash and a gold ring that were on the detainee’s person. When relatives subsequently raised concerns regarding the missing property, the officer allegedly returned the mobile devices but stepped up pressure on the family to extort further payments.
Sub-Inspector Neyamat Ullah has been the subject of mounting public criticism following multiple independent reports of corrupt practices and misuse of authority within the Savar jurisdiction. Despite formal written grievances submitted to senior police administration and subsequent coverage in national news media, the officer had remained on active duty. Continued inaction from internal police mechanisms ultimately prompted the victims to seek legal remedy through the courts.
Court officials confirmed that Suraiya Begum appeared before the Savar Cognisance Court on Sunday to record her statement under Section 200 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Satisfied with the sworn testimony and supporting documentation, the court formally admitted the case for investigation by the PBI.
