Police Officer Accused of Raping Nurse, Taking Tk 800,000

A police officer has been accused of establishing a physical relationship with a nurse at a private hospital in Munshiganj’s Gazaria by allegedly promising to marry her and subsequently taking Tk 800,000 from her and her family through deception.

The nurse has submitted a written complaint to Gazaria Police Station, seeking legal action over the allegations.

The accused has been identified as Ruman Hossain, 28, son of Aktar Ali of Dowatla village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila. According to the complaint, he is currently serving at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka.

According to the complainant, she first became acquainted with Ruman through Facebook in 2021. Their communication gradually developed into a romantic relationship. Although they lost contact for a period, Ruman allegedly re-established communication with her towards the end of 2025 and proposed marriage.

The nurse claims that, after renewing the relationship, Ruman began asking her for money on various occasions, saying he needed financial assistance to repay family debts. Trusting his assurances and believing that they would eventually marry, she and her family allegedly provided him with money through several channels.

The complaint states that the payments were made in cash, through bank accounts and via mobile financial services. In total, the money was allegedly handed over in 34 separate transactions, amounting to Tk 800,000.

The woman further alleged that Ruman established a physical relationship with her on multiple occasions after assuring her that he would marry her. She said the relationship continued on the understanding that their marriage would take place as promised.

The situation allegedly escalated in March this year when Ruman took her to Sylhet, saying they would marry. According to her account, he again had a physical relationship with her there but did not marry her as promised. Instead, he allegedly took her back home.

Afterwards, the woman said she repeatedly asked Ruman to return the money she had given him and to set a firm date for their marriage. However, he allegedly continued to delay matters by giving various excuses.

According to the complaint, 5 June was eventually fixed as the date for their marriage. The nurse alleged that neither Ruman nor any member of his family appeared on the scheduled day. Following the incident, she claimed, Ruman switched off his mobile phone and stopped communicating with her altogether.

The complainant’s father said the family later made enquiries at Ruman’s permanent address and allegedly learned that he was already married and had a seven-year-old daughter. He claimed that Ruman had concealed this information and had used false assurances of marriage to obtain money from his daughter.

The father has called for a proper investigation and appropriate legal action, saying the family wants justice in the case.

Attempts were made to contact Ruman Hossain for his response to the allegations. However, several calls to his mobile phone reportedly found the number switched off. As a result, his version of events could not be independently obtained.

Mohammad Sabbir Hossain, investigation officer at Gazaria Police Station, confirmed that a written complaint had been received. He said the allegations would be examined through an investigation and that necessary legal action would be taken based on the findings.

Police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged relationship, the claimed financial transactions and other relevant evidence as part of the investigation. The allegations have not yet been established in court, and the accused will have the opportunity to respond through the legal process.
