Police Use Undercover Musical Strategy To Arrest Seven

In a notable departure from conventional enforcement tactics, the Shahbagh Police, operating under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), have conducted a successful anti-narcotics operation within Suhrawardy Udyan. Using an undercover musical performance as a ruse, law enforcement officials successfully apprehended seven individuals found in possession of illegal substances. This strategic operation, which took place on Wednesday night, was formally detailed by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the DMP, N. M. Nasiruddin, during a press briefing on Thursday, 14 May 2026.

The Undercover Operation and Methodology

The operation was executed by a specialised team from Shahbagh Police Station, tasked with curbing the prevalence of drug consumption and retail within the historic grounds of Suhrawardy Udyan. To bypass the lookouts and the inherent wariness of those involved in the illicit drug trade, officers adopted a “stealth through performance” approach.

Members of the team donned civilian attire to blend in with the general public who frequent the park. The core of their strategy involved establishing a musical gathering, or “ganer ashor,” a common social sight in the park. By performing songs and mimicking the behaviour of typical park-goers, the officers managed to create an environment that appeared entirely benign to criminal elements.

Unaware that they were being observed by the police, the suspects congregated in the vicinity of the musical group. This allowed the officers to catch the individuals “red-handed” while they were in possession of and actively dealing cannabis (ganja). The absence of standard uniforms meant the suspects did not detect the presence of authority until the moment the arrests were initiated.

Profiles of the Apprehended Individuals

The individuals arrested during the raid have been identified by the authorities as follows:

  • Mohammad Mamunur Rahman (24)

  • Mohammad Rana (19)

  • Sajib Adhikari

  • Mohammad Shahidul Islam (42)

  • Mohammad Rakib Hossain (19)

  • Mohammad Al Amin (19)

  • Mohammad Masum Bhuiyan (24)

The age range of the suspects, largely comprising young men in their late teens and early twenties, highlights the demographic target of many urban anti-drug operations. The seizure of illegal narcotics during the apprehension provided the primary evidence for the subsequent legal proceedings.

Judicial Outcomes and Sentencing

Following their arrest and the initial processing at the Shahbagh Police Station, the seven suspects were produced before the Special Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court (Summary Trial Court) of the Ramna Division. Given the nature of the evidence and the circumstances of the arrests, the court proceeded with a summary trial.

The Magistrate found all seven individuals guilty of various offences related to the possession and trade of narcotics. Consequently, the court handed down sentences of rigorous imprisonment for varying terms, reflecting the specific involvement and history of each defendant. Rigorous imprisonment in this jurisdiction entails that the convicts will be required to perform hard labour during their period of incarceration.

Context of Urban Narcotics Enforcement

Suhrawardy Udyan, a vast and historically significant urban park in Dhaka, has frequently been identified by local law enforcement as a high-risk area for the assembly of petty criminals and drug peddlers due to its dense foliage and extensive footfall. Previous attempts at routine patrolling have often resulted in suspects fleeing before contact could be made.

DC N. M. Nasiruddin emphasised that this creative method was developed specifically to overcome the tactical challenges posed by the park’s environment. The DMP has signalled that this blend of unconventional strategy and strict enforcement will continue. The success of the “musical trap” is viewed as a deterrent, signalling to illicit groups that traditional indicators of police presence, such as uniforms and marked vehicles, may no longer be the only signs of impending enforcement.

This operation forms part of a broader, ongoing mandate by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to eradicate drug hubs from the capital’s public spaces. The authorities have reaffirmed that surveillance within Suhrawardy Udyan and surrounding areas like the Ramna Park and the Dhaka University campus remains a high priority for the Shahbagh and Ramna divisions.
