The federation’s Disciplinary Council imposed the temporary suspension while the case is investigated. The final outcome, including any further punishment, will depend on the findings of the inquiry, according to a statement issued by the FPF on Saturday.
The statement said the Disciplinary Council decided on 9 October to initiate formal proceedings after reviewing the disciplinary significance of an incident dated 7 October. The case was referred to an investigative committee on 10 October. The federation added that further details would not be disclosed until the investigation had been completed.
The case centres on Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, towards the end of September. The incident reportedly followed discussions over his role in the team, after head coach Jorge Jesus indicated that the forward would not be included in the starting line-up for the match against Denmark.
Ronaldo had also spent the entire match against Norway on the bench. Reports said tensions arose between the captain and the coach after he was told he would not start against Denmark, with the disagreement preceding his departure from the camp.
However, the federation’s investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether Ronaldo had an acceptable reason for leaving. The available statement does not provide a detailed account of the exchange between the player and the coach, nor does it set out Ronaldo’s own explanation.
The FPF’s disciplinary regulations provide for significant penalties when national-team players fail to attend training sessions, matches or other team activities without a valid reason. Under Article 160, a player may face a suspension lasting between one and six months. A financial penalty may also be imposed.
Any sanction beyond the current provisional suspension will depend on the findings of the investigation and the application of the relevant disciplinary rules. The temporary measure should not be interpreted as a final ruling on the case.
Ronaldo is one of Portugal’s most prominent footballers and has captained the national side for many years. His experience and standing within the team make the case particularly significant, although the disciplinary process applies independently of a player’s reputation or achievements.
The dispute also raises questions about the relationship between a senior player and the coaching staff, particularly over selection decisions and expectations during international duty. Coaches are responsible for determining their starting line-ups, while players are expected to comply with team arrangements and disciplinary requirements.
For Portugal, the immediate priority will be to establish the facts and resolve the matter through the federation’s formal procedures. The investigation will determine whether Ronaldo breached the rules and whether a further suspension or fine is warranted.
Until the inquiry is concluded and a final decision announced, the duration and consequences of any additional punishment remain uncertain.
