Rashid Haider remains one of the most distinguished figures in Bangladeshi literature, journalism and the documentation of the country’s Liberation War. A celebrated author, researcher, editor and cultural personality, he devoted his life to preserving Bangladesh’s literary heritage and recording the history of the 1971 Liberation War through meticulous research and documentary work. On the anniversary of his birth, he is remembered with profound respect for his lasting contribution to the nation’s intellectual and cultural landscape.
Although widely known simply as Rashid Haider, his full name was Sheikh Faisal Abdur Rashid Mohammad Ziauddin Haider. Affectionately called “Dulal” by family members, he was born on 15 July 1941 into the renowned Haider family of Dohapara village in Pabna district.
Haider established himself as one of the country’s most versatile literary figures. His work spanned short stories, novels, plays, essays, memoirs, translations, research publications and editorial projects. Throughout his career, he wrote or edited more than 70 books, reflecting both his literary creativity and his commitment to scholarly research.
His greatest distinction, however, lay in documenting the history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War. At a time when preserving authentic records of the country’s struggle for independence was becoming increasingly important, Haider dedicated years to collecting documents, testimonies and historical materials. His research-based publications helped safeguard invaluable aspects of the nation’s history, providing reliable resources for scholars, students and future generations interested in understanding Bangladesh’s path to independence.
His contributions to literature and historical research earned widespread recognition. Over the course of his distinguished career, he received several prestigious honours, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award, the Ekushey Padak, the Humayun Qadir Award and the Agrani Bank Literary Award, alongside numerous other accolades acknowledging his achievements in literature and cultural scholarship.
Haider’s academic journey reflected the same dedication that later defined his professional life. He completed his Secondary School Certificate from Gopalganj Institution in 1959, his Higher Secondary Certificate from Pabna Edward College in 1961, and obtained a Master’s degree in Bangla Literature from the University of Dhaka in 1965.
While studying at the university, he entered journalism under the encouragement of his elder brother, the noted dramatist Zia Haider. He began his career with the popular weekly Chitrali and, in 1964, served as Assistant Editor of Parikrama, the official publication of the Pakistan Writers’ Guild. These early experiences laid the foundation for a career that successfully combined journalism, literature and academic research.
In 1972, shortly after Bangladesh gained independence, Haider joined the Bangla Academy, one of the country’s leading literary institutions. During nearly three decades of service, he held several important positions before retiring as Director in 1999. He later served as Executive Director of the Nazrul Institute, where he continued working to promote Bangla literature and cultural heritage.
Rashid Haider passed away on 13 October 2020, leaving behind an extraordinary body of work that continues to inspire readers, researchers and literary enthusiasts. His books, editorial contributions and extensive research on the Liberation War remain valuable references in Bangladesh’s literary and historical scholarship.
Remembering Rashid Haider is not only an opportunity to honour an accomplished writer but also to recognise a dedicated historian who worked tirelessly to preserve the documentary record of Bangladesh’s struggle for independence. His lifelong commitment to literature, journalism and historical research has secured him a permanent place in the country’s cultural memory, ensuring that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
