A targeted operation by the River Police at Chandpur Launch Terminal led to the arrest of two women caught transporting nine kilograms of cannabis in the early afternoon on Sunday. Acting on actionable intelligence regarding illicit narcotics movement, officers established a cordon near the passenger boarding gates at approximately 1:45 pm to apprehend the suspects before they could board an outbound vessel.

The individuals taken into custody were identified as 30-year-old Amena Begum, hailing from Lalmohan sub-district in Bhola, and 34-year-old Mosammat Asma, residing in the Singpara locality of Munshiganj Sadar sub-district.

Details provided by police representatives confirm that a search of the suspects’ belongings yielded six kilograms of cannabis packed in Amena Begum’s luggage, alongside an additional three kilograms carried by Asma. Initial questioning revealed that the consignment had been sourced from the border district of Cumilla and was being moved through the riverine network towards Munshiganj for further distribution.

Chandpur Launch Terminal operates as a key transit node in Bangladesh’s inland waterway network, linking the southern coastal belt with central inland ports. Due to stringent law enforcement monitoring along main highway corridors, trafficking syndicates frequently attempt to route contraband through busy river terminals to evade highway checkpoints.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur River Police Station, Md Azamgir Hossain, verified the seizures and confirmed that formal charges under the Narcotics Control Act are currently being prepared against both women. Security and surveillance measures around the terminal’s piers have been stepped up to deter further illicit trafficking along the waterways, with officers maintaining heightened vigilance over passenger luggage and boarding areas.
