Russia’s Massive Ukraine Strikes Kill At Least 14

At least 14 people have been killed in a wave of Russian air strikes across Ukraine, with casualties reported in several regions from the capital Kyiv to the western city of Lviv. The attacks came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia could be preparing a major assault, according to reports.

The strikes damaged residential and other civilian infrastructure, including a multi-storey building. The deadliest attack was reported in Kryvyi Rih, President Zelensky’s home city, where a Russian Iskander-M ballistic missile killed six people, including two children, and injured eight others.

Six more people were reported killed in the Dnipropetrovsk region, while one person died in Kyiv and another in Poltava. In Lviv, close to Ukraine’s border with Poland, missile strikes damaged two residential buildings and left 26 people injured.

The scale of the assault prompted heightened security measures in neighbouring Poland. Polish forces scrambled fighter jets as a precaution, reflecting concerns that intensified Russian attacks near Ukraine’s western frontier could pose risks to the wider region. Poland, a member of both NATO and the European Union, has repeatedly monitored Russian missile and drone activity close to its territory since the full-scale war began.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had struck Ukrainian military targets stretching from the Kyiv area to Lviv. Moscow also claimed that three cargo vessels carrying weapons near the port of Odesa had been targeted. Ukrainian authorities have not accepted all of Russia’s claims about the nature and purpose of the targets.

The latest strikes came as Ukraine continues to press its allies for stronger air-defence capabilities. After returning from a visit to the United States, Zelensky wrote on social media that additional air-defence systems were urgently needed to protect Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian missile and drone attacks.

Air defence has become one of Kyiv’s most pressing military requirements. Ukraine relies heavily on Western systems to intercept ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones, particularly during large-scale attacks involving multiple weapons launched in quick succession. The ability to replenish interceptor missiles has also emerged as a major challenge for Ukraine and its international partners.

During talks in Washington with US President Donald Trump, Trump reportedly agreed to allow Ukraine to obtain a licence to produce Patriot missile systems. The development could potentially strengthen Ukraine’s ability to maintain and expand its air-defence network over the longer term. However, the availability of PAC-3 interceptor missiles remains a concern, with demand for advanced air-defence ammunition rising amid wider conflicts and heightened security pressures.

The latest Russian strikes were accompanied by reports of Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia. Earlier the same day, a fire broke out at a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, one of Russia’s largest online retailers, in the city of Penza. Zelensky accused the company of supplying equipment to the Russian military, an allegation denied by Moscow.

The exchange of long-range attacks underscores the continuing escalation of the conflict, with both sides increasingly relying on missiles and drones to strike targets far from the immediate front line. For civilians across Ukraine, the latest barrage again highlighted the vulnerability of cities and infrastructure despite extensive air-defence measures.
