Schoolteacher Found Dead in Abandoned Toilet Tank in Pabna

Police recovered the body of a 45-year-old schoolteacher from an abandoned toilet tank beside her home in Baroipara village of Ekdanta union, Atgharia upazila, Pabna, on Thursday morning, amid suspicion that she may have been strangled to death.

The deceased was identified as Gita Rani, wife of Nanda Das and a resident of Baroipara village. She worked as a teacher at Chachkia BRAC School. According to local residents and police, her husband lived in Dhaka, and she was staying alone at the family home.

The body was discovered at around 11am on Thursday, 30 July, after local residents became concerned when they could not find Gita Rani at her house. During a search of the surrounding area, they reportedly spotted her body inside the tank of an abandoned toilet near the house and informed the police.

Police officers from Atgharia Police Station subsequently went to the scene and recovered the body. The circumstances surrounding the death have raised concerns among residents, as the discovery came after an apparent break-in at the house.

According to information gathered by police and local residents, unidentified intruders are suspected to have entered Gita Rani’s home by cutting through a section of the wall during the early hours of Thursday. The incident is believed to have occurred at around 3am. Police suspect that she may have noticed the intrusion, leading to a struggle inside the house.

At some point during the confrontation, the attackers may have strangled her, police said in their preliminary assessment. The body was then allegedly taken outside and placed inside the abandoned toilet tank beside the house. However, investigators have yet to establish whether the suspected break-in and the killing were directly connected or whether the incident had another motive.

Atgharia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Haque said the body was being prepared to be sent to the morgue at Pabna General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The forensic findings are expected to help investigators determine the exact cause and circumstances of her death.

Police have not yet confirmed how many people may have been involved in the incident. The motive also remains unclear. Investigators are examining the possibility that the attack was linked to an attempted burglary, while other potential personal or local disputes are also expected to be considered as part of the inquiry.

The unusual circumstances of the death have caused considerable alarm in the area. Residents are particularly concerned that the teacher, who reportedly lived alone while her husband stayed in Dhaka, may have been vulnerable to an attack during the night.

Police are examining the condition of the house, the suspected point of entry and the surrounding area as part of the investigation. Officers are also working to determine whether any belongings were taken from the home and whether there are other clues that could identify those responsible.

OC Nazmul Haque said the police had not yet reached a definitive conclusion about who carried out the killing or why it occurred. Investigators are continuing their efforts to establish the sequence of events, identify those involved and determine the motive behind the death.
