Sagar-Runi Murder Case Report Delayed Again

The deadline for submitting the investigation report in the widely discussed murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi has been postponed once again. With this latest change, the date for submitting the report before the court has now been rescheduled for the 111th time. The court has fixed 15 October as the next date for presenting the investigation findings.

The report was scheduled to be submitted on Monday, but the investigating authority failed to place it before the court on the appointed day. Following the hearing, the court set a new deadline for the submission of the report. The repeated delays in completing the investigation have caused growing frustration among the victims’ family members, journalists, and people who have closely followed the case for years.

Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi were brutally murdered on the night of 11 February 2012 at their rented residence in West Rajabazar, Dhaka. At the time of his death, Sagar Sarwar was serving as the news editor of Machranga Television, while Meherun Runi was working as a senior reporter at ATN Bangla. Their killing shocked the country and triggered widespread demands for a swift and transparent investigation.

In the aftermath of the incident, the case became one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in Bangladesh. Different investigative agencies have been involved at various stages, while the responsibility for the investigation is currently with the Rapid Action Battalion. Despite the passage of many years, the authorities have yet to submit a final investigation report to the court, leading to repeated questions over the progress and effectiveness of the investigation process.

The court has issued several deadlines over the years for submitting the report, but each deadline has been followed by another extension. Although investigators have stated at different times that evidence was being examined, witnesses were being questioned, and relevant information was being reviewed, the full details of the incident and the identities of those responsible remain unresolved.

A total of eight people, including journalist couple’s acquaintance Tanvir Rahman, have been named as accused in the case. However, the long delay in reaching a conclusion has kept the victims’ families awaiting justice and has remained a major concern within the country’s media community.

The Sagar-Runi murder case continues to stand as one of Bangladesh’s most prominent unsolved killings. Journalists, family members, and members of the public have repeatedly called for an impartial investigation and legal action against those responsible. Although 15 October has been set as the new date for the submission of the report, uncertainty remains over whether the investigation findings will finally be presented on that day.
