Salma Mourns Father’s Death During Busy Musical Period

Bangladeshi singer Mousumi Akter Salma is grieving the death of her father, Fazlul Haque. She shared the news with her fans in an emotional social media post on Wednesday (16 September) at around 10pm.

Keeping her message brief, Salma wrote, “My father is no more.” She did not provide any further information about his death.

The news has brought grief to Salma’s family and relatives. The family has yet to disclose the cause of Fazlul Haque’s death. Details of his funeral prayer and burial, including the time and location, have also not been announced.

The bereavement comes as Salma has been actively working on several new musical projects. In recent weeks, the singer has been involved in recordings and releases across different styles, including contemporary songs and traditional Bengali music.

One of her latest releases is the duet ‘Prem Leela’, recorded with fashion designer and singer Biplab Saha. The song centres on rural Bengal’s traditions and a story of love. Its accompanying video has recently been released and has received a favourable response from viewers.

Salma has also recorded a Lalon song after a long gap. Titled ‘Kunje Ar Bhalo Lage Na Bondhu Bihone’, the track was written and composed by her guru Shafi Mondal. The song is expected to be released during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.

The recording adds a traditional dimension to Salma’s recent work. Lalon songs form an important part of Bengal’s folk musical heritage, with their repertoire often dealing with love, human relationships and spiritual themes. Salma has continued to take part in projects connected with folk music while also working on contemporary productions.

She has also lent her voice to a new arrangement of Rohon Raj’s popular song ‘Manush Boroi Swarthopor’. Salma recorded the track alongside Sumi Shabnam, Tasiba, Jarin and Rohon Raj. The music video has already been filmed.

The newly arranged song was scheduled to be released on Thursday (17 September), the day after Salma announced her father’s death. The planned release comes as the singer faces a deeply personal loss following the death of a close family member.

Before the bereavement, Salma’s recent schedule had included several different musical commitments. Her collaboration with Biplab Saha brought together contemporary performance with imagery inspired by rural Bengal, while her recording of the Lalon song marked a return to a traditional repertoire after a considerable break.

Her involvement in the new arrangement of ‘Manush Boroi Swarthopor’ has also brought her together with several other singers. With the filming already completed, the project was ready for release according to the previously stated schedule.

For now, however, Salma is dealing with the loss of her father. No further details have been released by the family about Fazlul Haque’s death or the arrangements for his funeral and burial. Any information about those arrangements is expected to come from the family.
