Law enforcement officers in Sundarganj Upazila, located within Gaibandha District, have taken a local office-bearer of the National Citizen Party (NCP) into custody following the discovery of illicit Yaba narcotics on his person.
The individual in question has been identified as Shakil Mia, 26, who also goes by the alias Shakil Khan. Residing in West Sicha (Hajipara) village in Chandipur Union, he is the son of Md Noor Mohammad Ali. Prior to his arrest, Shakil served as the Assistant Organisational Secretary for the NCP’s Sundarganj Upazila branch.
The law enforcement operation commenced during the early hours of Monday, 20 July, at approximately 12:45 am. Officers attached to the Kanchibari Police Investigation Centre launched a targeted operation at Dharmapur Market in Sreepur Union, acting on credible intelligence regarding local drug trafficking activities.
Investigating officers had been alerted to illegal transactions occurring in an open space adjacent to the cash counter at the Zobeda Filling Station. When the police team arrived on site, Shakil attempted to evade capture and flee the area. Officers intercepted him shortly thereafter, and a body search yielded eight Yaba tablets carefully wrapped in white polythene inside his trouser pocket.
Legal proceedings were initiated immediately following the operation. Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Nausher Ali lodged an official complaint at Sundarganj Police Station under the provisions of the Narcotics Control Act.
Inspector Md Selim Reza, In-Charge of the Kanchibari Police Investigation Centre, confirmed the details of the arrest on Monday afternoon. He noted that the raid was part of a broader anti-narcotics campaign in the region, adding that the suspect had been presented before the court and subsequently remanded to prison pending trial.
The National Citizen Party moved swiftly to terminate Shakil’s affiliation with the political group. Md Ashanur Rahman, Member Secretary of the NCP Sundarganj Upazila unit, reiterated that the party maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards illegal trade, asserting that no individual involved in drug offences can remain a party member. He confirmed that Shakil was summarily expelled from the Upazila Convenor Committee.
Furthermore, Md Al Shahadat Zaman Ziko, Convenor of the Sundarganj Upazila NCP, verified that the party leadership acted as soon as official notification was received from law enforcement, ensuring the suspect was stripped of his duties and expelled from the party structure without delay.
