Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto fell narrowly short of a significant batting milestone in the ongoing Mirpur Test against Pakistan, missing out on both his tenth Test century and a rare world record by just 13 runs in the second innings.
Shanto, who had earlier produced a composed 101 in the first innings, again anchored Bangladesh’s batting effort as the team sought to set a challenging target for Pakistan. In the second innings, he looked set to convert his start into another three-figure score, continuing his strong form at the crease.
However, his innings ended on 87 runs from 150 deliveries when he attempted a reverse sweep against left-arm spinner Noman Ali. The shot did not connect cleanly, and the ball struck his pad. Following an appeal, the on-field umpire adjudged him lbw. Shanto reviewed the decision, but the referral was unsuccessful, confirming his dismissal and ending his innings short of a century.
Second innings dismissal summary
| Innings | Runs | Balls faced | Dismissal | Bowler | Shot attempted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Second innings | 87 | 150 | lbw | Noman Ali | Reverse sweep |
In the first innings, Shanto had already reached three figures with 101 runs, reinforcing his role as Bangladesh’s leading batter and captain in the match. His performance across both innings placed him within reach of a rare statistical feat in Test cricket.
Shanto has previously achieved the milestone of scoring centuries in both innings of a Test match on two separate occasions. In 2023, he recorded scores of 146 and 124 against Afghanistan in Mirpur. He later repeated the achievement in June 2025 against Sri Lanka in Galle, scoring 148 and 125.
Had he converted his second innings into another century in this match, Shanto would have become only the fourth batter in Test history to record three separate matches featuring centuries in both innings. The exclusive list of players who have achieved this three times includes Sunil Gavaskar, Ricky Ponting, and David Warner.
With his dismissal on 87, Shanto missed the opportunity to join that elite group and fell 13 runs short of adding another century to his Test career tally.
