Police in Narayanganj conducted a special operation and arrested one individual after recovering a locally manufactured iron pipe gun and a spent cartridge casing, according to law enforcement officials. The operation was carried out late on Monday night in the Madinabag area under Siddhirganj Police Station.
Authorities said the raid took place at approximately 10:50 pm on 11 May following intelligence information suggesting the presence of an individual allegedly carrying an illegal firearm in the locality. Acting on the tip-off, officers launched an operation near a three-road junction beside the residence of one Rakib Pradhan in Madinabag.
During the raid, police arrested Md Murad, 30, a resident of the Godnail area. A search conducted immediately after his detention reportedly led to the recovery of one locally made iron pipe gun and a spent cartridge shell from his possession.
Locally manufactured firearms, often referred to as improvised or country-made weapons, are frequently linked to criminal activities in parts of Bangladesh due to their ease of concealment and comparatively low production cost. Law enforcement agencies regularly conduct targeted drives to recover such weapons as part of broader crime prevention measures.
Officials stated that the recovered firearm has been seized as evidence and will be examined as part of the investigation. The arrested suspect has been charged under the Arms Act and was later sent to court for further legal proceedings.
Mohammad Emdadul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Siddhirganj Police Station, said police remain committed to continuing operations against illegal weapons and criminal networks in the area.
“A case has been filed against the arrested accused under the Arms Act, and he has been produced before the court. Operations by Siddhirganj Police Station to recover illegal weapons and suppress crime will continue,” the officer said.
Police in industrial areas such as Siddhirganj and surrounding parts of Narayanganj often intensify surveillance because of concerns over organised crime, extortion, and illicit arms circulation. Security officials say regular intelligence-based operations are intended to reduce the risk of violent incidents and improve local law and order.
