Shops Ordered to Close at 7pm Nationwide

The government has issued a fresh directive instructing all shopping malls, markets, and shops across the country to close by 7pm in an effort to conserve electricity.

On Monday, the Power Division issued the instruction, which has been sent to the mayors and administrators of all city corporations, divisional commissioners, and deputy commissioners.

The directive states that, previously, in line with instructions from the Prime Minister, a decision had been implemented requiring shopping malls, markets, and shops to remain open until 7pm as part of electricity-saving measures.

However, during the period of Eid-ul-Azha, this restriction was temporarily relaxed to facilitate business activities. From 10 May, the closing time was extended to 10pm on a temporary basis to support commercial operations during the festive period.

According to the latest instruction, the special relaxation granted for Eid has now expired. As a result, the earlier schedule has been reinstated from 1 June. From this date onwards, all shopping malls, markets, and shops are required to complete their operations by 7pm, replacing the previously permitted 10pm closing time.

The directive further adds that, in order to ensure electricity savings, all illuminated billboards must also be switched off by 7pm. The same time restriction will apply to fairs, trade fairs, and cultural events held across the country, meaning lighting and related electricity usage must be discontinued after the specified hour.

The authorities have been instructed to ensure strict implementation of these measures through appropriate monitoring and administrative action.
