A tragic incident in northern Bangladesh has claimed the lives of two young siblings after they drowned in a pond while attempting to retrieve a floating plastic bottle. The accident occurred on Wednesday morning in Khayerbari Kutipara village under Fulbari upazila in Dinajpur district, casting a pall of grief over the local community.
The deceased have been identified as six-year-old Sabiya Jannat and her four-year-old brother, Md Siam. The children were the son and daughter of Shahin Alam, a grocery shopkeeper whose small business operates adjacent to their home.
According to family members and witnesses, the incident unfolded around 7:00 a.m. when the children were playing near a field situated beside a pond close to their residence. Their mother, Keya Begum, was busy preparing breakfast at home, while their father had just opened his shop for the day.
During play, the younger child, Siam, noticed a plastic bottle floating on the surface of the pond. Attempting to retrieve it, he entered the water but quickly began to struggle and was unable to keep himself afloat. Seeing her brother in distress, Sabiya immediately jumped into the pond in an effort to rescue him. Unfortunately, she too became trapped in the deep water and drowned alongside him.
Another child present at the scene reportedly ran back to the house to alert the family. Relatives rushed to the pond and managed to recover the two children from the water before taking them to Fulbari Upazila Health Complex. However, on arrival, doctors on duty declared both siblings dead.
Local authorities, including the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, visited the scene shortly after being informed. He described the incident as deeply heartbreaking and confirmed that steps had been taken to support the bereaved family. Preliminary observations suggest that the children may have entered the pond while playing, leading to the fatal drowning.
The double tragedy has left the village in mourning, with neighbours and relatives gathering at the family home to offer condolences.
