A tragic domestic incident in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram has left a 65-year-old man dead, with police alleging that he was beaten to death by his own son following a prolonged family dispute reportedly linked to drug abuse and recurring tensions at home.
The incident occurred on Friday night at around 10:30 pm in the Purbol Alinagar area of Korerhat Union, where the victim, Abu Ahmad (65), a local farmer and resident of the same locality, lived with his family. According to police and family accounts, the confrontation escalated violently, resulting in his death at the scene.
Witnesses and relatives said Abu Ahmad had long been suffering from age-related illness and physical weakness, which had forced him to withdraw from active work. His only son, Ibrahim Milan (35), who earned a living through bamboo and timber trading along with various informal labour activities, was allegedly struggling with substance abuse, which frequently led to domestic conflicts.
Family members reported that disputes had intensified over the past week after Ibrahim attempted to live separately with his wife and mother-in-law, a move that further strained relations with his parents. The tension reportedly culminated on Friday evening when Ibrahim allegedly attacked his father with a wooden stick as Abu Ahmad was returning home from a nearby shop.
When Abu Ahmad’s wife, Jarina Begum, rushed to intervene, she was also assaulted. She sustained a fractured arm during the attack. Despite attempts to save him, Abu Ahmad succumbed to severe injuries inflicted during the assault.
Police confirmed that locals detained the accused shortly after the incident before handing him over to law enforcement. Authorities have stated that preliminary findings point towards a family dispute exacerbated by alleged drug addiction.
Abu Ahmad’s younger brother, Shah Alam, described him as a gentle and simple man who had long been distressed by his son’s behaviour. He also alleged that this was not the first instance of violence within the household.
The body of the deceased has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
