Student Photo-Taking Incident at BAU

A man has been detained on allegations of secretly photographing female students at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh, in an incident that triggered swift action by students and later police involvement.

The accused, identified as Abu Kharia Tofael, is reported to be a resident of the Netrokona district. He was apprehended on Monday (11 May) at around midday near Abdul Jabbar Mor within the university premises. According to eyewitness accounts, students became suspicious after noticing his unusual behaviour around female students, particularly near the Faculty of Food Engineering area.

Incident and Immediate Response

Eyewitnesses and students stated that the man was allegedly caught taking photographs of a female student using his mobile phone without consent. The situation escalated when students confronted him and demanded to see his device. Upon inspection, multiple photographs of female students—captured from the same location—were reportedly discovered.

The accused was then taken to the university’s Proctor Office by students for further questioning. During this time, he allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by breaking his mobile phone. Students also claimed that controlled substances were found in his possession during the search.

The victim, a student of the Faculty of Food Engineering who wished to remain anonymous, described the sequence of events. She stated that while returning from the university gymnasium, she was alerted by another student who suspected that someone was photographing them. Upon checking the suspect’s phone, she and others reportedly found multiple images of herself and other female students taken in the same area. Following this discovery, the suspect was taken to the Proctor Office.

Administrative and Police Action

University authorities confirmed that the individual was subsequently handed over to the police stationed on campus. Sub-Inspector Md. Rahmat Ullah of the BAU police camp stated that the accused has been detained and will be transferred to Kotwali Police Station, where legal proceedings will begin upon filing of a formal complaint.

He added that a complainant will be required to initiate the case, after which further legal steps will be taken through the court.

BAU Proctor (Acting), Professor Dr. Kazi Farhad Kadir, said students initially informed the administration about the alleged misconduct. He confirmed that the suspect was brought to the Proctor Office after being detained by students. He also noted that the accused attempted to destroy his mobile phone, which hindered evidence verification, and that suspected narcotics were recovered from his possession.
