A team from Dhanmondi Police Station came under attack while attempting to arrest suspected muggers in the Mohammadpur area of the capital, according to police officials. During the operation, one alleged mugger was shot in the leg after officers said the suspects continued attacking police personnel with sharp weapons. Two other suspects were also arrested at the scene.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Monday in a lane on Azam Road, behind Mohammadpur Town Hall in Mohammadpur.
Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam confirmed the matter to local media. He stated that police conducted the operation at around 5:45 a.m. following intelligence gathered during the investigation of a previous case. Acting on confidential information, officers moved into the area to detain members of a suspected mugging gang.
According to police, the suspects attempted to attack officers using Chinese axes, machetes and other sharp weapons. In response, one police officer initially fired two blank rounds from a pistol in self-defence. When the suspects allegedly continued advancing, the officer fired at the leg of one suspect.
The injured suspect was identified as Sakib. He is currently receiving treatment under police guard at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Two other suspects, identified as Palash and Biplob, were arrested from the scene.
Police said the group had been carrying out robberies in Dhanmondi and nearby areas by travelling on motorcycles and threatening victims with machetes and knives. Officers also recovered several weapons and items from the suspects, including Chinese axes, machetes, knives and a toy revolver.
Several police officers sustained minor injuries during the confrontation and later received primary medical treatment at a hospital.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to address organised street crime and armed mugging incidents in different parts of the capital, particularly during early morning and late-night hours.
