Teenage Schoolboy Commits Suicide in Bogura Following Marital Breakdown

A seventeen-year-old student from Gabtali Upazila in Bogura took his own life on Monday morning, consumed by acute emotional distress after his teenage wife divorced him just three months into their marriage. The victim, identified as Rifat Ali Khan, was found dead inside his family home in Rahimarpara village, within the Nepaltali Union.

Rifat, the son of local resident Rubel Khan, was a ninth-grade pupil at Kadamtali High School. According to family members and local residents, Rifat had recently married a female classmate after a romantic relationship. However, the union dissolved rapidly when his wife served him with divorce papers. The sudden separation left the teenager severely depressed and emotionally distraught.

The tragic incident unfolded between 8:30 am and 9:00 am on Monday. Rifat entered his family’s tin-roofed home, tied a scarf around his neck, and suspended himself from a ceiling fan. Relatives discovered his body shortly afterwards and alerted the authorities. Officers from the Gabtali Model Police Station arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and arranged for its transfer to a medical facility.

Rakib Hasan, Officer-in-Charge of Gabtali Model Police Station, confirmed that initial evidence points to suicide triggered by severe despair following the divorce. The body was dispatched to the mortuary at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for an autopsy. Law enforcement officials confirmed that an unnatural death case has been registered, with formal proceedings awaiting the post-mortem findings.

The tragedy underscores persistent concerns surrounding early marriages and adolescent mental health vulnerabilities across regional Bangladesh. Although statutory provisions establish the legal age of marriage at eighteen for females and twenty-one for males, informal adolescent unions remain prevalent in many rural communities. When these unstable unions fracture, young individuals frequently lack the psychological support or professional counselling necessary to process profound emotional trauma.

Local residents and community figures have voiced deep sorrow over the loss, stressing the pressing need for parental guidance, mental health awareness, and youth counselling initiatives across rural districts to support vulnerable adolescents.
