A football match in Uruguay took an unexpected turn when a clearance sent the ball beyond the stadium boundary and into a busy road, prompting a sudden collision between two cars.
Incidents involving footballs flying into the stands are relatively common, and spectators are occasionally injured when a ball reaches the crowd. What happened during a second-tier match in Uruguay, however, was far less usual. The ball left the playing area altogether and ended up on a public road, where it contributed to a road accident.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 8 August, during the second-division fixture between Montevideo and Paysandú at Estadio Parque in ANCAP. The match had been progressing normally until the 24th minute, when a defender attempted to clear the ball from danger.
The clearance was struck with considerable force. Instead of remaining within the stadium complex, the ball travelled beyond the boundary and landed on the road immediately outside the ground.
At the time, vehicles were moving along the road. One driver suddenly spotted the football in front of the car and reacted quickly, applying the brakes and bringing the vehicle to a stop. The driver behind, however, had far less time to respond.
A collision followed almost immediately.
The unusual sequence of events was captured by the broadcaster’s live television cameras, giving viewers a clear glimpse of the moment the football entered the road and the subsequent crash. Footage of the incident was later circulated on social media, where the extraordinary nature of the event attracted attention.
Despite the alarming appearance of the collision, the consequences were limited. Local authorities said the vehicles involved sustained only minor damage. No driver or passenger suffered serious injuries, meaning the incident did not develop into a major accident.
The match was temporarily stopped after the ball left the stadium. Officials needed to retrieve it and ensure that the people involved in the road incident were safe before play could resume. Once the situation outside the ground had been brought under control, the match continued.
The unusual interruption did not ultimately affect the result. Montevideo secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Paysandú.
For those watching the match, however, the most memorable moment was unlikely to be the decisive goal. Instead, it was the extraordinary sight of a football leaving the pitch, reaching a public road and unexpectedly becoming part of a traffic collision. Fortunately, what could have become a much more serious incident ended with only minor vehicle damage and no serious injuries.
