Three British-Bangladeshis Die in Essex Sea Tragedy

Three members of the same British-Bangladeshi family, including a mother and her teenage daughter, have died after being swept away by strong tidal waters while visiting a beach in Essex, eastern England. The tragic incident occurred during a family outing and has left relatives and the wider British-Bangladeshi community in mourning.

The victims have been identified as Selina Rahman, 42, the wife of Sheikh Mansur Rahman, Vice-President of the United Kingdom Jubo Dal, their 15-year-old daughter Samia Rahman, and Selina’s nine-year-old nephew, Musa Ahmed, the son of her sister. Sheikh Mansur Rahman’s ancestral home is in Mollargaon Union of South Surma Upazila in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

According to Sheikh Mahfuzur Rahman Munna, the victim’s brother, the family had travelled to West Mersea Beach, near Colchester in Essex, on Wednesday afternoon for a recreational visit. During the outing, the tide reportedly rose suddenly and powerful currents swept young Musa into the sea.

Seeing the child in danger, Selina Rahman immediately entered the water in an attempt to rescue him. Her daughter, Samia, also went into the sea to assist her mother. The force of the current, however, proved overwhelming, and all three were pulled beneath the water before they could reach safety.

Emergency services responded swiftly after the incident was reported. Local police officers, lifeboat crews, a Coastguard rescue helicopter and an air ambulance were all deployed to the scene as part of a large-scale rescue operation. Despite extensive efforts by emergency responders, all three victims were later pronounced dead.

Family members said the devastating loss has left relatives in profound shock. Losing three members of the same family in a single incident has compounded the grief for those close to them.

Relatives have also confirmed that no final decision has yet been made regarding funeral arrangements. The family is still considering whether the bodies will be repatriated to Bangladesh for burial or laid to rest in the United Kingdom.

Incidents involving strong tidal currents can occur unexpectedly along parts of the British coastline, particularly in areas where water levels change rapidly with the tide. Emergency authorities routinely advise visitors to remain alert to local safety warnings, supervise children closely near the water and avoid entering the sea during hazardous conditions.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of condolences from members of the British-Bangladeshi community, many of whom have expressed sympathy for the bereaved family as they come to terms with their devastating loss.
