A four-year-old boy has passed away at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) following a 16-hour battle for survival, having suffered catastrophic injuries when a speeding private car struck him near the National Museum of Science and Technology in the capital’s Agargaon area.
The young victim, Zisan, was the elder of two sons born to Ali Akbar, a trader hailing from Gudirpur village in Bhola’s Lalmohan upazila. The family had been residing in West Agargaon.
The incident occurred around 12:00 pm on Wednesday near the family’s residence. According to family members and eyewitnesses, Zisan was playing near the museum grounds when he stepped off the road’s central traffic island onto the main carriageway. A fast-moving private car hit the boy with immense force, knocking him to the asphalt and leaving him critically injured.
Bystanders acted swiftly to rescue the unconscious child from the roadway. He was rushed to the nearby National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, where doctors administered emergency treatment. However, as his medical condition deteriorated rapidly, specialists recommended an immediate transfer to DMCH for specialized medical care.
Upon arrival at DMCH, medical staff admitted Zisan to the hospital’s One-Stop Emergency Centre (OSEC). Despite round-the-clock efforts by attending physicians to stabilize his vital signs, the young boy succumbed to his injuries at approximately 4:00 am on Thursday.
Describing the harrowing ordeal, Zisan’s father recalled rushing to the medical facility immediately after receiving news of the crash, only to witness his eldest son remain in a critical state until his demise early the following morning.
Sub-Inspector Md Selim Hossain of the DMCH Police Outpost confirmed the fatality, stating that the toddler’s body has been retained at the hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem examination prior to being handed over to the bereaved family.
Police authorities added that the incident has been formally reported to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Law enforcement officers are currently reviewing details of the crash, gathering evidence, and working to identify both the motor vehicle and the driver involved in order to initiate formal legal proceedings.
The tragic loss has cast a profound pall of gloom over the West Agargaon neighbourhood. The fatality also highlights pressing urban safety concerns regarding pedestrian vulnerability and vehicular speed management near residential pockets in Dhaka, where the absence of enclosed play areas frequently forces young children close to high-speed arterial roads.
