Tragedy in Bagerhat as Two Young Cousins Drown in Pond

A heartbreaking accident in south-western Bangladesh has claimed the lives of two young girls, plunging a rural community into deep mourning. Jannati Akhtar, aged eleven, and her eight-year-old cousin, Lamiya Akhtar, drowned on Sunday morning after slipping into the deep water of a local commercial fish enclosure (ghere) in Dariayla village, located within the Mollahat sub-district of Bagerhat.

The tragedy unfolded at around 7:00 am when the two girls ventured out with their grandmother, Nashima Begum, to gather water lilies from an aquaculture pond near their home. Jannati, the daughter of Mustain Sheikh, and Lamiya, the daughter of Mostaq Sheikh, were attempting to pluck the floating flowers when they lost their footing and slipped beneath the surface.

Realising the children were missing, family members and neighbouring villagers launched an urgent search of the water. Upon recovering the submerged bodies, relatives rushed the girls to a local clinic in the Chunkhola area for emergency care. As their conditions remained critical, they were immediately transferred to the Mollahat Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician pronounced both children dead on arrival.

Confirming the casualties, the Officer-in-Charge of Mollahat Police Station, Md. Shahadat Hossain, stated that both victims succumbed to accidental drowning. He added that the authorities permitted the grieving family to proceed with funeral preparations and burial rites.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of child mortality across rural Bangladesh, particularly in low-lying coastal and wetland districts like Bagerhat. Millions of households rely on artificial fish enclosures (gheres) and natural water bodies for their livelihoods. During the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, these enclosures swell with heavy rainfall, concealing dangerous depths and slippery embankments. Local residents noted that while children often accompany elders near open water, the hidden underwater terrain poses severe risks, making constant adult supervision vital to prevent such sudden, devastating losses.
