A heartbreaking accident claimed the lives of two 18-month-old twin sisters on Tuesday morning after they fell into a pond near their home in Comilla’s Barura upazila. The deceased toddlers have been identified as Junaira and Taslima, the twin daughters of Jasim Uddin, a resident of Kachiapukuria village.

The fatal incident occurred while the young sisters were playing near the edge of a household pond adjacent to their family home. Unaware of the lurking danger, the toddlers accidentally slipped into the water. Relatives grew alarmed upon noticing their sudden absence and launched a frantic search around the homestead. Their worst fears were realized when the infants were discovered floating motionless in the pond.

Family members and neighbours pulled the sisters from the water and rushed them to the Barura Upazila Health Complex. Medical intervention, however, proved futile. Dr Jahirul Islam, in-charge of the emergency department at the health complex, confirmed that the twins were brought to the facility at approximately 10:50 AM. Upon examination, attending physicians pronounced both children dead on arrival, stating they had succumbed to drowning well before reaching the hospital.

Barura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Najmul Haq confirmed that law enforcement had been notified of the tragedy. A police team was promptly dispatched to Kachiapukuria village to inspect the scene, examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, and complete necessary administrative procedures.

The sudden loss of the two young siblings has cast a deep pall of gloom over the village, leaving the family devastated. Accidental drowning remains a widespread and severe public health challenge in rural Bangladesh, particularly among young children aged between one and four years. Homestead ponds, canals, and open ditches are common features of the rural landscape, offering vital water access for daily household chores but presenting constant hazards for young children who lack physical coordination and risk awareness.

Safety experts continuously stress the need for continuous adult supervision and the installation of low-cost protective fencing around open water bodies. A brief moment without oversight can lead to irreversible loss, highlighting the urgent need for heightened community awareness to safeguard vulnerable toddlers from domestic water hazards.
