Ronald Koeman Jr produced a remarkable display of composure from the penalty spot, scoring twice as goalkeeper Telstar rescued a 2–2 draw against Cambuur in the Eredivisie.
A goalkeeper’s primary responsibility is to prevent goals, not score them. Yet Koeman Jr turned that convention on its head, twice leaving his goalmouth to take penalties and finding the net on both occasions. His contribution proved decisive as Telstar recovered from a difficult position to claim a valuable point.
The 31-year-old is already a familiar name in Dutch football, although largely because of his famous father. Ronald Koeman Jr is the son of Dutch football legend Ronald Koeman, the former Netherlands manager and one of the most prolific goalscoring defenders of his generation.
Koeman Jr’s performance against Cambuur came at a particularly difficult moment for Telstar. The home side was reduced to 10 men in the 22nd minute when Nökkvi Thórisson was shown a straight red card. Telstar therefore had to play for more than an hour with a numerical disadvantage, making the task of securing a result considerably harder.
The situation deteriorated further after half-time. Cambuur scored twice within seven minutes to establish a 2–0 lead and appeared to have taken firm control of the contest. With Telstar a man down and trailing by two goals, defeat seemed increasingly likely.
Then came the first turning point.
Only three minutes after Cambuur’s second goal, Telstar were awarded a penalty. Rather than leaving the responsibility to an outfield player, Koeman Jr made the long journey from his goal to the opposite end of the pitch. He remained calm under pressure and converted from 12 yards, giving Telstar a lifeline.
The drama continued deep into stoppage time. With 11 minutes added on, Telstar were awarded another penalty. Once again, Koeman Jr stepped forward. Once again, he delivered. His second successful spot-kick brought the score level at 2–2 and completed an extraordinary comeback.
The two goals have added another chapter to Koeman Jr’s growing reputation as a goalkeeper who can make a difference at crucial moments. His goals for Telstar have all come in 2026, including a significant strike on the final day of last season.
Against Volendam, he scored from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to help Telstar secure a 2–1 victory. That result was particularly important because it confirmed the club’s survival in the Eredivisie. His latest double therefore continues a pattern of decisive contributions when his team needs them most.
Naturally, the performance has also revived comparisons with his father. Ronald Koeman became renowned for his ability to score from defence during an illustrious playing career with clubs including Barcelona, PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord. Across club and international football, he scored 254 goals, an extraordinary tally for a defender. Of those, 115 came from penalties, although he also missed 16 spot-kicks during his career.
After retiring as a player, the elder Koeman established himself as a manager, taking charge of Southampton, Everton and Barcelona, as well as the Netherlands national team. His son, meanwhile, followed a very different route in football by specialising as a goalkeeper.
Koeman Jr was born in Barcelona while his father was playing for the Catalan club. He began his professional career in the Netherlands with Almere City before moving to TOP Oss. In the summer of 2021, he joined Telstar and gradually became an important figure within the club.
His role also became significant during Telstar’s promotion campaign in 2025. After 47 years away from the Dutch top flight, the club returned to the Eredivisie, bringing with it the challenge of competing against more established sides.
Following Sunday’s draw with Cambuur, Telstar sit 13th in the table after four matches. The newly promoted side are still adapting to life at the highest level, and every point could prove valuable during the long campaign.
For Koeman Jr, however, the match offered something beyond a routine league result. Twice he left the safety of his penalty area, twice he accepted the pressure of taking a decisive spot-kick, and twice he scored. His father built a legendary reputation for scoring goals from defence. Ronald Koeman Jr is now creating his own unusual legacy—finding the net while standing between the posts.
