In a deeply distressing incident at Darshana Halt Railway Station in Chuadanga district, a 25-year-old woman lost her life after leaping beneath a moving train, moments after leaving her four-year-old child seated on the platform. The deceased has been identified as Nilufa Khatun, wife of Nazrul Islam, residing in Joyrampur village under Damurhuda Upazila of the district.
The tragedy took place around midnight on Friday, 31st July. According to eyewitness accounts, as an approaching passenger train was pulling into the station, Nilufa Khatun deliberately stepped onto the tracks and threw herself into the path of the engine. Bystanders at the station reacted swiftly, retrieving her from the line and rushing her to a local private medical clinic in Darshana. However, the attending medical team pronounced her dead on arrival owing to the critical nature of her injuries.
The presence of her four-year-old son, who remained seated alone on the platform during the horrific event, drew immediate concern from onlookers. Bystanders shielded the distressed child and alerted law enforcement, ensuring his safety amidst the surrounding confusion.
Providing details on the police response, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Darshana Railway Police Outpost, Rafiqul Islam, stated that officers recovered a mobile phone belonging to the deceased at the scene, which enabled them to establish direct contact with her relatives. He confirmed that the young boy was immediately brought into the protective custody of the railway police. Law enforcement officials are completing required administrative and legal procedures before releasing the deceased’s body to her family and reuniting the young child with his surviving relatives.
