A festive journey ended in profound tragedy after a passenger trawler overturned during severe weather on the Meghna River in Bangladesh, leaving three siblings dead and their father missing. Following an agonizing two-day search operation, rescue teams from the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, working alongside the River Police, recovered the bodies of three children from the same family near the Baidyer Bazar area in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.

The disaster unfolded on Thursday when the family, alongside several other passengers, boarded an engine-driven wooden trawler from Srimaddi village, situated in the Homna Upazila of Cumilla district. The group was travelling across the river to attend a wedding ceremony in Baidyer Bazar. Mid-voyage, the vessel encountered sudden, violent winds and torrential rain, causing it to capsize rapidly in the turbulent currents of the Meghna River. Five individuals were initially reported submerged and missing in the surge.

While local residents and emergency responders managed to pull the body of a woman named Rayesa Begum from the water shortly after the vessel sank, four members of a single family remained unaccounted for. The intensive search effort yielded grim results late on Friday night and early Saturday morning, when the bodies of two young brothers, Sajib and Shamim, were spotted floating near the Al Mustafa Factory embankment. Shortly thereafter, at approximately 8:30 AM, divers located the floating body of their older sister, Samia.

The tragic news has cast a pall of grief over Srimaddi village, where an ambulance transported Samia’s remains from Sonargaon on Saturday morning to join those of her brothers for burial preparations. Emergency operations remain active on the river as specialized diving units continue to comb the waters for the family’s patriarch, Helal Uddin, who remains missing.

Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Director of the Narayanganj Fire Service, confirmed the recoveries and noted that rescue operations will persist until the missing father is located. Such incidents reflect recurring safety concerns surrounding rural water transport in Bangladesh, where sudden seasonal storms frequently pose immense hazards to small, open-deck wooden trawlers operating without adequate safety apparatus or weather warning monitoring.
