In one of the most remarkable coincidences in the history of South Asian arts, two of Bengal’s greatest musical icons shared not only a shared destiny as husband and wife, but also the exact same birth date.
Tuesday, 28 July, marks the joint birth anniversary of the legendary composer Kamal Dasgupta and the celebrated Nazrul Sangeet exponent Firoza Begum. Mr Dasgupta was born on 28 July 1911 in Jessore, while Firoza Begum was born on the same date nineteen years later, in 1930, in Faridpur. Together, their artistic partnership and marriage created a golden era for modern Bengali music.
Paying tribute to his parents on social media, Hamin Ahmed, member of the acclaimed Bengali rock band Miles, expressed his enduring respect and prayers, highlighting their profound contributions to the Bengali musical canon.
Kamal Dasgupta remains celebrated as one of the subcontinent’s most prolific music directors. Joining Gramophone Company HMV in 1935, and later Columbia Records, he set astonishing industry records, once recording 53 songs in a single month and averaging around 45 compositions monthly. His iconic work on Juthika Roy’s recording of Mirabai bhajans in 1943 earned Miss Roy the title of “Mirabai” from Mahatma Gandhi, whilst Banaras Hindu University conferred a doctorate upon Mr Dasgupta in recognition of his genius.
Firoza Begum’s extraordinary journey began at a remarkably young age. Raised in a culturally vibrant family in Kolkata, where classical maestros were regular visitors, she auditioned at HMV Kolkata at the age of eleven or twelve before National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, singing his composition Jodi Porane Na Jage Akul Piasa. Impressed by her talent, Poet Nazrul brought in Kamal Dasgupta to listen to the young prodigy, marking the very first meeting between her future husband and mentor.
Firoza Begum made her broadcasting debut on All India Radio whilst in the sixth grade and released her first HMV record, Morur Buke Jibondhara Ke Bohalo, at the age of twelve under the guidance of Chitta Roy. Her renditions of timeless classics such as Momer Putul and Dur Dweepbashini catapulted her to international acclaim, leading to over 380 solo concerts worldwide. Her vast contributions were recognized with prestigious honors, including the Independence Award, the Ekushey Padak, and the Netaji Subhash Chandra Award.
