Two Bodies Found Ichamati River Raise Border Concerns

A growing sense of unease has taken hold in the frontier district of Jhenaidah after law enforcement authorities recovered two unidentified bodies within a span of just three days from the Ichamati River near Maheshpur upazila. The back-to-back discoveries have prompted heightened concern among residents and officials alike, raising questions over possible cross-border implications and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Second recovery intensifies alarm

The latest body was retrieved on Thursday (16 April) at approximately 6:00 pm after locals detected a strong, unusual odour along the riverbank. Curious residents approached the area and eventually entered the shallow waters, where they discovered a decomposing corpse concealed beneath dense clusters of water hyacinths. They immediately alerted police and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Responding promptly, members of Maheshpur Police Station, in coordination with BGB personnel, reached the scene and recovered the body from roughly 10 metres inside Bangladeshi territory from the zero line. Authorities confirmed that the body had significantly decomposed, estimating that the death had occurred at least three to four days prior.

Police officials stated that the identity of the deceased remains unknown. However, a passport recovered from the victim’s pocket is now being examined as a potential lead in the identification process. Investigators hope that document verification will provide clarity regarding the individual’s identity and possible origin.

Following standard legal procedures, the body is being prepared for transfer to the morgue at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital after completion of an inquest report.

Repeated incidents spark deeper concern

This marks the second such recovery from the same location within a matter of days. Earlier, on Monday night (13 April) at around 9:00 pm, police had recovered another unidentified young man’s body from the identical stretch of the river. That victim, too, remains unidentified, adding to the mystery.

The recurrence of such incidents in a short timeframe has unsettled the local population. Residents fear the possibility of organised crime, cross-border smuggling disputes, or other illicit activities contributing to the deaths. Given the river’s geographical position along the Bangladesh–India border, authorities are also exploring whether the bodies may have drifted across from neighbouring territory.

Ongoing investigation and regional implications

Lieutenant Colonel Rafiqul Alam, commanding officer of the local BGB battalion, confirmed that the body was found within Bangladesh’s borders but in close proximity to the international boundary, underscoring the sensitivity of the situation. He noted that authorities are actively investigating whether the two incidents are linked.

Security agencies have begun cross-checking the passport details with immigration and intelligence databases. A forensic examination is also expected to shed light on the cause of death, which remains undetermined.

Community concerns and official response

In Maheshpur and surrounding areas, residents have voiced increasing anxiety over safety, particularly given the unusual frequency of such discoveries in what is typically a quiet rural locality. Calls have been made for increased surveillance, including enhanced river patrols and monitoring of border activities.

Officials have assured the public that all necessary investigative steps are being undertaken. They emphasised that cooperation between police, border forces, and intelligence units will continue until the identities of the victims are confirmed and the circumstances behind their deaths are fully understood.

For now, the twin recoveries remain shrouded in uncertainty, casting a shadow over the border region and highlighting the complexities of maintaining law and order in sensitive frontier zones.
