The accident occurred at around 12.30 am on Friday (22 October) in the Sabuj Pahar area of Nayapara, within Khutakhali Union of Chakaria. Both victims were travelling in the pickup, which was heading towards Cox’s Bazar from Chakaria.
The deceased were identified as Abdullah and Md Yasin. Abdullah was the son of Abul Kalam and came from Fuler Dail in the Hnila area of Teknaf upazila. Yasin was the son of Md Dulal and a resident of Rampur in the Saharbill area of Matamuhuri.
According to police, a Dhaka-bound Shyamoli NR Paribahan passenger bus collided head-on with the pickup carrying vegetables. The force of the impact left both men with severe injuries.
Officers from Malumghat Highway Police Station arrived at the scene after receiving information about the crash. With assistance from local residents, they recovered the two victims and took them to the upazila health complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Md Selim Mia, the officer-in-charge of Malumghat Highway Police Station and a sub-inspector, said both victims had sustained serious injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies. Legal proceedings in connection with the accident were under way, he added.
The Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway is a key transport route in south-eastern Bangladesh, serving passenger traffic as well as the movement of agricultural produce and other goods. Buses and commercial vehicles regularly use the road to connect communities across the region.
Head-on collisions can have devastating consequences, particularly when larger passenger vehicles and goods-carrying vehicles are involved. Safe speeds, careful driving and attention to road conditions are essential on busy highways. Night-time journeys can present additional challenges, making alertness and caution particularly important.
However, the precise circumstances surrounding this collision had not been established immediately. Police had not confirmed what caused the vehicles to collide, and further details about their speeds or positions before the crash were not available.
The investigation will be important in determining the circumstances of the incident. Authorities are proceeding with the necessary legal steps, according to police.
The deaths of Abdullah and Yasin have brought a sudden loss to their families. The incident also highlights the serious consequences that highway collisions can have for people travelling in commercial vehicles, particularly on routes carrying both passenger and agricultural traffic.
