Two young men have been arrested with 80 yaba tablets during a raid conducted by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Manikganj Sadar upazila.
The seized tablets are estimated to be worth around Tk 24,000, according to the police.
The operation took place at about 1.50am on Wednesday (7 October) on a paved road in the Chandra area of Sadar upazila, in front of Halim Traders near Colonel Maleque Medical College.
The suspects have been identified as Md Sayan Hossain, 30, son of Md Mojibur Rahman of Panchankhara village in Sadar upazila, and Sifat Ahmed, 20, son of Lavlu Mia of Bajeyapt Bhatra village.
According to the Manikganj DB, the operation was conducted under the direction of Police Superintendent Mohammad Sarwar Alam, BPM-Seba. DB Inspector and in-charge Manabendra Balo supervised the operation, while Sub-Inspector Md Ataur Rahman led the team.
Police said officers searched the two men during the operation and recovered 40 yaba tablets from Sayan Hossain. Another 40 tablets were recovered from Sifat Ahmed. The entire seizure, totalling 80 tablets, was subsequently taken into police custody.
Yaba is an illicit tablet containing methamphetamine and is classified as a narcotic substance under Bangladesh’s drug control laws. The possession, transportation and distribution of such substances can lead to criminal proceedings under the Narcotics Control Act.
The DB did not provide further details about where the tablets had allegedly come from or whether the two men were suspected of supplying them to others. Those matters are expected to form part of the investigation following the arrests.
Police said legal proceedings were under way to file a case against the two suspects under the Narcotics Control Act at Manikganj Sadar Police Station.
The operation comes as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to identify and disrupt the movement of illicit drugs. In such cases, investigators typically examine the circumstances surrounding the seizure as well as possible links to wider supply networks.
The two men were arrested at the scene after the tablets were allegedly recovered from their possession. Further details about the case are expected to become available as the investigation and legal proceedings progress.
Police said the seized yaba tablets would be treated as evidence in the case. The suspects will face the legal process following the filing of the case.
