Two infants have died in Sylhet and Mymensingh within a 24-hour period with symptoms consistent with measles. The deaths occurred between 8 a.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. on Friday, according to hospital authorities.
During the same period, hospitals reported 23 new admissions of children presenting with measles-like symptoms, while 20 children were discharged following recovery. At present, a total of 104 children remain admitted in measles isolation wards across the relevant medical facilities.
In Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, a nine-month-old infant receiving treatment for measles-like symptoms died while under care. The child, a resident of Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh district, had been admitted on 12 May to the hospital’s measles isolation ward. Hospital records confirm that the death occurred on Thursday morning during treatment.
Separately, another infant died at Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet. The child, named Bondhon, was five months old and had been receiving treatment for measles-like symptoms. This death brings the total number of measles and measles-suspected fatalities in the Sylhet division this year to 32.
Health authorities further stated that 311 patients with measles-like symptoms are currently undergoing treatment across hospitals in the Sylhet division. In the same 24-hour period, 64 new suspected cases were admitted to hospital facilities. However, no new laboratory-confirmed measles cases were recorded during this time.
