Two motorcycle riders were killed after a truck ran over their vehicle on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Sarail, Brahmanbaria, on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred at around 7.30am in the Baishamora area while the motorcycle was stationary in a traffic jam.
The deceased were identified as Anup Kumar, 55, and Anwarul Azim, 40. Preliminary information suggests that both were residents of Narsingdi district town.
Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Khatihata Highway Police Station, said the two men were travelling from Narsingdi towards Sylhet on a motorcycle. When they reached Baishamora, traffic congestion forced them to stop on the highway.
A truck coming from behind then struck the motorcycle, leaving both riders critically injured. Anup Kumar died at the scene, while Anwarul Azim was rescued and taken to Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital. He later died while receiving treatment.
Police seized the truck following the accident and took it to Khatihata Highway Police Station. However, the driver reportedly fled the scene.
The officer-in-charge said preparations were under way to take legal action in connection with the incident. Further action will depend on the investigation and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The Dhaka–Sylhet Highway is a major transport route connecting the capital with Sylhet and several other areas. It carries a large volume of passenger buses, goods trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles every day.
Traffic congestion can increase the risk of collisions, particularly when vehicles approach stationary traffic without maintaining a safe distance or reducing speed in time. Motorcycle riders are especially vulnerable in collisions involving heavy vehicles because they have limited physical protection.
The deaths of the two men highlight the dangers faced by road users during traffic congestion. Identifying the truck driver and establishing the precise circumstances of the crash will be important steps in the investigation.
