An unidentified man has died while undergoing treatment at Dighinala Upazila Health Complex in Khagrachhari. Authorities have so far been unable to establish his identity, and police are working to determine who he was so that his family or relatives can be informed.
According to hospital sources, the man was brought to Dighinala Upazila Health Complex on Monday, 20 July, in a severely ill condition. An individual reportedly transported him to the hospital by auto-rickshaw and admitted him for treatment. However, after completing the admission process, the person who brought him to the facility left and did not remain there.
Doctors and healthcare workers subsequently began treating the unidentified patient. Hospital staff provided the necessary medical care in an effort to stabilise his condition. Despite their efforts, however, his physical condition continued to deteriorate.
The man eventually died while receiving treatment at around midnight on Tuesday, 21 July, according to hospital authorities. Following his death, the hospital informed the police about the matter.
Hospital officials said they had been unable to establish the patient’s identity either during his treatment or after his death. The absence of confirmed identification has made it difficult for authorities to contact his family and determine where he came from.
Police from Dighinala Police Station later visited the hospital after being informed of the death. Officers are now making efforts to identify the deceased through available information and other means. Once his identity is confirmed, the authorities will take the necessary legal steps in accordance with the relevant procedures.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s arrival at the hospital are also likely to be examined as part of the process of identifying him. Police may need to determine who brought him to the facility and whether that person had any information about his identity or family. However, no further details have been disclosed by the authorities at this stage.
Dr Mohammad Ali Mazrui Rahman, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said doctors and healthcare workers had provided the patient with the treatment required to improve his condition. Despite receiving medical attention, his health continued to worsen and he died at around midnight on Tuesday while under treatment.
He also urged the relevant authorities and members of the public to assist law enforcement agencies in identifying the deceased.
Police and hospital authorities have appealed to anyone who may recognise the man or have information about his identity to contact Dighinala Police Station or Dighinala Upazila Health Complex as soon as possible. Such information could help authorities trace his relatives and complete the necessary legal procedures.
The case has also highlighted the difficulty authorities face when a seriously ill person is brought to hospital without reliable identification or accompanying relatives. In such circumstances, medical staff must provide urgent care while police and hospital officials later work to establish the patient’s identity.
For now, the primary focus remains on identifying the deceased and locating his family. Police have not disclosed further information about his age, appearance or other identifying features. The authorities are expected to take the next legal steps once his identity is confirmed.
