A sixty-year-old village doctor, identified as Attab Hossain, has been apprehended by law enforcement authorities in Kaliganj Upazila under the Jhenaidah district of western Bangladesh. The individual was detained on Saturday evening, 6 June 2026, following serious allegations regarding the sexual assault of a young female child who had visited his dispensary. The timely intervention of local police personnel ensured that the suspect was safely extracted from the custody of an aggrieved local crowd that had assembled in the immediate area.
The Incident at the Local Dispensary
The accused individual, Attab Hossain, is a permanent resident of Monoharpur village, situated within the administrative boundaries of Kaliganj Upazila. According to local sources and community representatives, the incident transpired on Saturday afternoon at approximately 5:30 PM. The victim in this case, a third-grade female student at a local educational institution, had travelled to Attab Hossain’s commercial medical shop. The minor had been sent by her household to purchase essential pharmaceutical medicines for her paternal grandmother.
Taking advantage of the temporary absence of other customers or witnesses within the commercial premises, the village doctor allegedly lured the minor girl into an adjacent private inner room of the structure. It was inside this closed room that the suspect reportedly subjected the young student to sexual assault. Following the completion of the alleged assault, the minor child was permitted to leave the premises and return to her family residence.
Discovery and Immediate Mobilisation of the Public
Upon her return home, the minor child exhibited significantly altered behavioural traits and physical distress, which immediately aroused the suspicion of her family members. Following targeted questioning by her guardians regarding her visible state of agitation, the student disclosed the details of the ordeal she had experienced at the village dispensary. As the detailed information regarding the traumatic assault diffused throughout Monoharpur village, an immense wave of public anger and tension engulfed the entire locality.
An aggrieved crowd consisting of local residents and neighbours swiftly assembled at the location of the dispensary, where they confronted Attab Hossain and forcibly detained him to prevent his escape from the jurisdiction. The atmosphere in the area deteriorated rapidly, threatening to escalate into a serious public order situation. Upon receiving urgent notification regarding the ongoing public containment of a criminal suspect and the mounting local volatility, a specialised team from the Kaliganj Police Station rushed to the specified site at approximately 8:30 PM to manage the situation.
Medical Appraisals and Administrative Action
The responding police contingent successfully extracted the accused doctor from the hands of the public assembly and escorted him directly to the lock-up facility of the Kaliganj Police Station for secure detention. Simultaneously, law enforcement personnel prioritised the physical welfare of the victim by coordinating her immediate transfer to a state medical facility for emergency forensic evaluation and supportive clinical care.
The victim was initially admitted to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where she was examined by the medical officer on duty. Dr Ariful Islam, the attending physician at the Upazila Health Complex, provided a preliminary medical assessment to reporters, stating that the initial physical indicators strongly suggest that the young child was subjected to rape.
However, to achieve conclusive forensic confirmation and gather precise statutory evidence, the medical authorities have officially referred the victim to the more advanced Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for a comprehensive forensic examination.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, Jellal Hossain, verified the sequence of events to the media, confirming that the suspect was taken into custody immediately after the police received the formal alert. He reiterated that the individual remains detained under strict police supervision and assured that all necessary legal proceedings and statutory charges will be systematically initiated against the accused as soon as the final forensic medical documentation is delivered by the specialised hospital authorities.
