Border tensions flared in Meherpur on Tuesday when members of India’s Border Security Force detained a seventy-year-old Bangladeshi farmer near the international boundary, prompting enraged local residents to retaliate by detaining two Indian nationals in response. The standoff, which unfolded along the Ishakhali frontier under Meherpur Sadar Upazila, was eventually defused following a rapid flag meeting between the border guards of both nations.
The incident began at approximately 8:00 AM on Tuesday when seventy-year-old Abdul Mannan, son of the late Nur Box from the Ishakhali Masjidpara area, went to tend his fields. For years, Mannan has cultivated green chillies and other crops on a modest plot of land spanning about one and a half bighas near the Ishakhali border point. While applying pesticides to his crops on Tuesday morning, BSF personnel intercepted and detained him, dragging him across the frontier.
Word of the detention spread rapidly through the village, causing widespread public anger. Mannan’s grandson, Ibrahim Khalilullah, explained that local residents initially approached the border guards to request his grandfather’s release, but their pleas were ignored. Outraged by the refusal, villagers crossed paths with two Indian farmers working or traveling near the frontier zone and brought them back to the village as leverage. The detained Indian citizens were identified as Sachin Karmakar and Narayan Deb.
To prevent the volatile situation from escalating further, commanders from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the BSF arranged an urgent flag meeting at 2:00 PM on Tuesday. Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, commander of the Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), confirmed that during the diplomatic exchange, the BSF handed back the detained Bangladeshi farmer. In a reciprocal gesture, the two Indian nationals detained by the villagers were safely returned to the Indian border force.
Meanwhile, a separate border incident unfolded in the northern district of Kurigram, where another Bangladeshi citizen was detained by the BSF. Twenty-three-year-old Ajibar Rahman, son of Nurul Mia from Kaziar Char, was taken into custody late Monday night after crossing the international boundary near the Donalar Matha area within Shilkuri Union of Bhurungamari Upazila. According to local residents, a small group approached close to the international border pillars under cover of darkness and encountered BSF patrols. While his companions managed to flee back across the frontier into Bangladesh, Ajibar was caught.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbub-ul-Haq, commander of the Kurigram Battalion (22 BGB), verified that the young man was apprehended after trespassing onto Indian territory. Authorities confirmed that formal legal and administrative procedures are currently underway to secure his repatriation through official channels.
