Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior has ended months of speculation by signing a new long-term contract with Real Madrid, securing his future at the Santiago Bernabéu until 30 June 2032.
The 26-year-old winger had entered the final year of his previous deal, prompting widespread interest from several leading European clubs. Arsenal were among those reportedly monitoring his situation in recent months, hoping to capitalise if negotiations with Madrid failed. Those rumours have now been put to rest after the Spanish giants officially confirmed on Thursday (6 August) that both parties had reached an agreement on a fresh six-year contract.
Shortly after the announcement, Vinícius shared an emotional message with supporters on Instagram, reflecting on his journey in the Spanish capital.
“Eight years at the Bernabéu are far too few… six more years, then forever,” he wrote, signalling his desire to spend the prime years of his career with the club.
In an official statement, Real Madrid praised the Brazilian’s contribution, describing him as one of the team’s most influential players during one of the most successful eras in the club’s history. His pace, creativity, ability to score decisive goals and growing leadership have established him as a central figure in Madrid’s attack.
Negotiations over the contract had reportedly been ongoing for well over a year and were understood to have stalled at one stage. The situation changed after Madrid presented a revised proposal earlier this week, which Vinícius accepted, paving the way for the agreement to be finalised.
Vinícius joined Real Madrid from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2018 as one of the world’s most highly rated young prospects. After an initial period of adaptation, he developed into one of European football’s elite wide forwards. He first renewed his contract with the club in 2021, and throughout the latest round of negotiations he repeatedly described Real Madrid as his “dream club”, leaving little doubt about his desire to remain in Spain.
The Brazilian recently returned from international duty with his national team at the World Cup before reporting for Real Madrid’s pre-season preparations on Monday. After successfully completing his medical examinations, he resumed training with the rest of the squad as preparations continue for the new campaign.
Vinícius has already built an impressive record in Madrid colours. Across all competitions, he has scored 128 goals in 375 appearances for the club. At international level, he has netted 13 goals in 54 matches for Brazil. His honours with Real Madrid include two UEFA Champions League titles, three La Liga championships and one Copa del Rey triumph, achievements that underline his importance to one of Europe’s most decorated clubs.
According to reports, Arsenal would have intensified their efforts to sign the Brazilian had he rejected Madrid’s latest proposal. With the new contract now secured, the Premier League champions are expected to turn their attention to alternative options to strengthen the left side of their attack.
The announcement of Vinícius’ extension coincided with another significant piece of transfer business at the Bernabéu. Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to €140 million, approximately £120 million.
The arrival of Diomande represents Madrid’s sixth signing of the summer under new head coach José Mourinho. The club have already strengthened the squad with Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi. Real Madrid are also continuing their pursuit of Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri, although they face strong competition from long-time rivals Barcelona in the race for his signature.
