Villagers in Dhulia, situated within Jhenaidah’s Harinakunda Upazila, apprehended a 24-year-old madrasa teacher on Friday afternoon before soperding him to law enforcement following allegations of repeated sexual abuse involving a 14-year-old student.
The suspect, identified as Tanvir, taught at a residential religious school in Ghoshbila village, located in the adjacent Alamdanga Upazila of Chuadanga district. The teenage victim, whose family resides in Dhulia, had been living at the residential facility to pursue his education. Local residents and police officials revealed that the teacher regularly targeted the child inside the madrasa’s office room, taking advantage of his position of authority over the young boarder.
The situation escalated earlier this week when the accused took the boy to a room on the second floor of the facility and subjected him to another assault. To enforce silence, Tanvir threatened the boy with severe consequences if the matter was disclosed to his family or school authorities. Distressed by the ordeal, the student managed to leave the facility and return to his home in Jhenaidah, where he detailed the incidents to his family.
Word of the abuse quickly spread through the village, triggering widespread outrage. When the teacher was spotted in Dhulia village at approximately midday on Friday, an incensed group of local residents confronted and detained him before alerting the Harinakunda Police Station. Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after 12:00 pm to take the suspect into custody. Upon initial questioning in the presence of local witnesses, Tanvir reportedly admitted responsibility for the crime.
Confirming the detention, Asit Kumar Roy, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) at Harinakunda Police Station, stated that police moved swiftly after receiving the report from the community. He clarified, however, that because the alleged crimes occurred within the territorial boundaries of Alamdanga in Chuadanga district, the victim’s family must formally lodge an official complaint at the Alamdanga Police Station. Harinakunda police are now coordinating with their counterparts in the neighbouring district to facilitate the transfer of the suspect and ensure appropriate legal proceedings commence without delay.
