Wedding Called Off in Brahmanbaria Over Dispute on Menu

A wedding in rural Brahmanbaria was abruptly called off following a heated argument between the families of the bride and groom, triggered by a dispute over wedding catering arrangements.

The incident took place on Monday in Tolatala village, situated within the Dharkhar Union of Akhaura Upazila. The groom, Junaid Miah, is an expatriate living in Japan. He was set to marry Rasheda Akter, daughter of Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan from Tolatala village, with the formal ceremonies scheduled for that afternoon. Junaid had arrived at the bride’s residence accompanied by approximately 150 guests and relatives.

Festivities initially began according to local custom, with the groom receiving a floral welcome upon arrival. However, friction reportedly surfaced early on when Junaid expressed displeasure with the floral bouquet presented to him.

The situation escalated significantly after the communal meal concluded. As part of the traditional hospitality, special platters of food were served to the groom, his brother, and his uncle. Tensions flared when Junaid noticed the absence of a whole roasted goat on his platter. A verbal altercation quickly broke out between the groom and the bride’s relatives over the menu.

Shafiqul Islam, the bride’s father, explained that no prior arrangement or demand regarding a whole goat had been agreed upon before the event. He had attempted to calm the situation by explaining this and even offered to arrange a whole goat during the subsequent post-wedding celebrations. According to Shafiqul, Junaid’s brother attempted to intervene and diffuse the tension, at which point Junaid petulantly told his brother to marry the bride instead. Deeply offended by this conduct, the father decided to call off the wedding entirely.

Following this decision, the bride’s family halted all proceedings. They returned all wedding gifts and gold ornaments to the groom’s family and instructed them to leave the premises. Despite the hospitality extended to the visiting guests, the matrimonial union was dissolved on the spot.

The incident quickly gained traction online, sparking widespread discussions and mixed reactions across social media platforms. The groom presented a different perspective in a social media post the following morning, claiming that the altercation arose from financial disagreements regarding the dower, or mahr, rather than the catering. He alleged that the bride’s family demanded ten times the previously agreed amount after the meal, leading to the dispute and their eventual departure.

Local authorities, including Dharkhar Union Parishad member Ashik Miah, confirmed that they were briefed on the incident. According to local accounts, the groom’s inappropriate behaviour and remarks regarding the food served as the primary catalyst for the bride’s father to cancel the marriage.

The abrupt termination of a major family celebration has since become a talking point throughout the local community, highlighting how unexpected tensions can derail matrimonial ceremonies.
