Kannada superstar Yash’s highly anticipated action drama, Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups, has found itself at the centre of widespread public debate following its worldwide theatrical release on 26 August. Marking the actor’s high-profile return to the silver screen four years after the monumental success of KGF: Chapter 2, the project generated immense anticipation among fans and cinema enthusiasts alike. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the gritty gangster saga is set against the historical backdrop of Portuguese-era Goa, delving into the dark underworld and the brutal pursuit of power.
Despite the grand release, the film has drawn sharply mixed reactions from audiences and critics. Whilst the visual scale and atmosphere have drawn praise, a specific scene featuring actress Rukmini Vasanth has sparked fierce backlash across social media platforms. Alongside Rukmini, the ensemble cast boasts prominent stars including Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, and Tara Sutaria. However, it is Rukmini’s bold sequence alongside Yash that triggered a wave of criticism immediately after the film hit the screens.
Disappointed viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disapproval, with one fan remarking that such a sequence was entirely unexpected from an actress of Rukmini’s standing. Others went further, labelling the inclusion of the scene as a sign of cheap screenwriting aimed purely at sensation. Conversely, a section of loyal fans stepped forward to defend the actress, arguing that the sequence contains no explicit kissing or intimacy, and claiming that the online outrage is an unnecessary storm generated over a routine narrative moment.
This is not the first instance of the film courting controversy regarding its romantic sequences. Prior to the release, similar online debates erupted over intimate moments shared between Yash and Kiara Advani. During promotional events, both actors addressed the speculation directly, urging audiences not to pass judgement based on isolated snippets from teasers or songs. They maintained that every sequence was crafted thoughtfully to serve the broader storyline rather than to provoke. Nevertheless, as the adult-themed fairytale continues its theatrical run, dissatisfaction regarding its narrative execution and controversial scenes remains a prominent talking point among filmgoers.
