In Chattogram, 15 people have been killed over the past 13 months due to political disputes and clashes between criminal gangs. Among these, 10 murders occurred in connection with internal conflicts within the BNP.
Ahead of the national parliamentary elections, this situation has raised concern among local BNP leaders. The shooting of a BNP candidate during election campaigning has particularly raised questions about law and order. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that these incidents were intended to destabilise the interim government and obstruct the upcoming national elections.
On Wednesday evening, the BNP candidate for Chattogram-8 and five others were shot while campaigning in Chalitoli. Sarwar Hossain was killed. Additional clashes in Rauzan and Mirsarai resulted in five more deaths, while a Jubo Dal worker was killed in Khulshi over a banner dispute.
The city police commissioner assured the public that there is no need to panic and several armed individuals have already been arrested. However, due to limited law enforcement effectiveness, criminals are reportedly acting without hesitation in public killings.
