Homna, 28 January 2026: A total of 215 activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allied organisations have been formally named as defendants in a case filed at Homna Police Station. The complaint was registered late on Wednesday evening.
According to Inspector Dinesh Dashgupta, the investigating officer at Homna Police Station, the case stems from an altercation that occurred on 22 January between BNP supporters and those of an independent candidate. The incident escalated into a physical confrontation, prompting the independent candidate’s supporter and former chairman of Homna Upazila, Zahirul Haque Zahar, to file the official complaint.
The case marks the first legal action related to the forthcoming national parliamentary election in Homna. Speaking to reporters, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Morshedul Alam Chowdhury said, “This is the first instance of election-related legal proceedings in Homna. We are fully committed to ensuring that residents can exercise their voting rights peacefully.”
He added that law enforcement agencies are on high alert to prevent any form of electoral violence in the future. “Our personnel are fully prepared to maintain order and provide security at polling stations during the election period,” he stated.
Local sources reported that the clash caused tension among residents, raising concerns about potential disruptions during the election campaign. Political analysts emphasise the importance of creating a safe and neutral environment to facilitate free and fair voting, particularly in areas experiencing heightened political activity.
For clarity, the key details of the case are summarised in the table below:
| Incident Date | Filing Date | Location | Complainant | Defendants | Nature of Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22 January 2026 | 28 January 2026 | Homna, Comilla | Zahirul Haque Zahar (Former Upazila Chairman) | 215 BNP and allied activists | Election-related violent clash |
Analysts note that incidents of this nature, though isolated, have the potential to influence voter sentiment and may increase scrutiny on law enforcement preparedness. Residents have expressed hope that the authorities will ensure a peaceful voting environment and minimise any risk of violence.
The Homna Police have assured that they will closely monitor all electoral activities and intervene promptly if any unlawful or violent incidents occur. Their goal is to uphold democratic principles and guarantee that all eligible voters can exercise their franchise without fear or disruption.
With parliamentary elections approaching, both local communities and political parties are being urged to maintain calm and adhere to the legal framework, ensuring a transparent and orderly electoral process.
